The temporomandibular joint (TMJ),

commonly referred to as the jaw, is the joint connecting your skull to your lower face. There is one of these joints on either side of your jaw bone (mandible) and they are responsible for opening and closing the mouth, facial expressions, chewing and talking. TMJ pain can involve several symptoms, including pain around the jaw, headaches, neck pain and jaw locking. This pain arises when there is a dysfunction in and or around the muscles or the temporomandibular joint itself. Neck issues, poor posture, stress and dental problems can also contribute to symptoms in the TMJ.

Causes & Considerations

There are many causes for jaw pain and TMJ disorders. It is crucial for long term relief that the cause of your unique symptoms are identified and resolved. Your osteopath will conduct thorough history taking and physical assessment to identify what may be contributing to this pain. Some causes for jaw pain include:

  • Teeth grinding
  • Stress
  • Neck problems
  • Posture issues
  • Trauma to the face or head
  • Weakness in the muscles around the jaw
  • Wear and tear of the TMJ that can result in arthritis
  • Improper alignment of the teeth and jaw
  • Poorly fit dental appliances
  • Genetics
  • Ageing

A significant contributor to TMJ pain stems from issues in the neck. Good quality movement of the TMJ relies heavily on the proper movement and alignment of the upper neck. It is important to consider the quality of neck movement with any presentation of jaw pain in order to achieve long term resolution.

Osteopathic Treatment for Jaw Pain

TMJ pain can impact quality of life, especially if other associated symptoms arise such as headaches or neck pain. Osteopaths can help reduce pain in the jaw, and give advice to resolve any dysfunction contributing to TMJ disorder. Treatment examples commonly used for TMJ pain include muscle energy technique, gentle counterstrain release techniques, joint articulation, dry needling, and soft tissue massage. Osteopaths will also address the nervous system to reduce the impact of stress on pain, and any postural habits that can contribute to TMJ pain.

Lifestyle & Management Advice

Several lifestyle habits should be considered when managing jaw pain. Below is a list of strategies and habits that your osteopath may discuss with you.

  • Stress relief- stress has a significant impact on whole body health, including jaw tension which contributes to TMJ pain. Practising mindfulness or reducing stress through healthy sleep habits can assist in promoting healing and reducing pain and tension
  • Sleep- sleep is restorative and allows the body to heal. Our primary healing time is from 10pm-2am…if we are asleep. Ensure you are sleeping especially between 10pm-2am to assist in your physical healing.
  • Avoid overuse of jaw muscles- eat softer foods and avoid chewing gum or sticky/chewy foods
