Minimise Your Risk of Wireless Radiation Exposure

Wireless radiation could have harmful effects on children’s development and health, concluded a comprehensive study published in February 2022.

There is widespread evidence linking wireless radiation exposure with chronic illness, different types of cancer, behavioral issues including attention disorders, memory issues, reproduction impacts. There is also evidence of wireless radiation contributing to DNA damage, heart issues, nervous system disruption and sperm damage.

Wireless network systems in our homes and offices that allow the ease of data transmission without hard wiring emit high frequency electromagnetic radiation called Radio Frequency Radiation or RF’s. The wireless equipment and devices such as smart TVs, mobile phones, handheld devices like iPads and wireless computer networks (WLAN) have become a significant source of RF radiation in our homes and offices.

“Pregnancy, infancy and childhood are periods of critical susceptibility (to this radiation), especially for the brain, which is developing rapidly.” It is important to respect the significant effect this radiation has on our little people and take responsibility to take necessary steps to avoid their exposure if we are to give them the best chance at a long, healthy life.

“Especially when used at early stages of life, these devices can interfere with social development, learning, and socialization. They also can have lifelong and potentially irreversible adverse biological effects.” Not only having devices in our home transmitting, but particularly when we provide devices for our kids to use, we are increasing their exposure purely by proximity.

However, it is not only children that can be affected by RFs. It is crucial we, as adults, reduce our daily exposure to this radiation if we are to maximise our own health and wellness. We could all probably do with a bit less screen time anyway!

Below are some of the recommendations made from the authors in this study. These are suggestions to reduce your family's exposure to RFs. In 2023, we are living in a radiation soup like never before seen. Our bodies are suffering under it's effects. Any change you make to reduce your exposure is cumulative. If you make one change, it will support your health. If you make 5 changes, you have reduced your exposure even more and you will benefit even more. I ask you to be open to these suggestions. What do you have in place for convenience that you could work around to reduce your exposure? Some are as simple as what we do at home - turn the WiFi off. Some are more significant changes. Please take some time to work through this list and reflect on how much convenience you really need, how much of your current behaviours and habits can you give up for a healthier home and office?

Mobile Phones

  • Avoid using mobile phones as toys or teething items.
  • When parents hold their babies or children in their arms, they should not simultaneously use or hold mobile phones or wireless devices as this will expose the child to Radiofrequency radiation (RFR).
  • Decrease overall time spent on wireless phones and prefer corded phones for long calls.
  • Delay purchasing a first mobile phone for a child. Mobile phones should only be used by children for emergencies.
  • Prefer text messaging over voice and video calls.
  • Decrease exposure to and through the brain by using mobile phones in speaker mode, away from the head and body, or wired airtube headsets with the phone away from the body. Avoid airpods.
  • Avoid carrying mobile phones against the body like in a pocket, sock, or bra.
  • Do not talk or text while driving.
  • Switch phone to airplane mode with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Hotspot antennas toggled off in settings. Many applications on phones can still be utilized in airplane mode. For example, in order to play movies and music but avoid unnecessary RFR exposure, download the files first, then switch the device to airplane mode and play.
  • Keep an eye on your signal strength (i.e. how many bars you have). The weaker your cell signal, the harder your phone has to work and the more radiation it gives off. It's better to wait until you have a stronger signal before using your device
  • Avoid making calls in cars, elevators, trains, and buses. The mobile phone works harder to get a signal through metal, so the power level increases.
  • Connect the mobile phone to the internet with ethernet cables.

Computer, laptop and tablet internet connections in buildings

  • Install internet access via a hardwired ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi.
  • Wi-Fi routers should be distanced from areas where children sleep, play and school.
  • At a minimum, power Wi-Fi networks off at bedtime and during periods when not in use.
  • Connect computer/laptop/tablet accessories and peripherals such as printers, speakers, keyboard and mouse with cords, rather than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

At home

  • Replace cordless phones with corded phones. Cordless phones and their base stations emit RFR.
  • Avoid wireless digital baby monitors. If necessary, choose wired monitoring systems.
  • Remove screens, electronics and wireless devices from the bedroom.
  • Turn off devices at night and ensure sleep areas are not against a wall where utility meters are installed on the other side as “smart” meters are sources of RFR and other EMF.

Additional considerations during pregnancy

Simple preventive measures during pregnancy can significantly decrease fetal exposures, especially the high intensity exposures from a wireless device resting directly on the abdomen.

  • Distance mobile phones and wireless devices away from your abdomen.
  • Power off mobile phones when carrying them near your body.
  • Always use laptops and tablets on a desk, not on your lap or close to your abdomen.
  • For voice calls, use corded phones instead of cell phones or cordless phones.
  • Use ethernet connections instead of Wi-Fi to connect devices.

At my home, we take care to reduce our exposure in the following ways:

  • Power Off our devices like iPads and laptops when not in use
  • Power Off and unplug computers when not in use
  • Switch off TV when not in use
  • WiFi router placed away from living areas
  • Switch WiFi off before bed
  • Switch bluetooth on when needed
  • Limited screen time for my boys to a family movie Friday night and limited time on weekends
  • Keep devices away from our bodies - use bench, desk, floor or arm of couch
  • Keep phones away from our bodies, avoid putting them in our pocket
  • Use speaker on phone calls when possible
  • Minimal use of bluetooth devices like headphones and speakers
  • No use of wearables such as iWatch, FitBit etc.
  • No devices in kids bedrooms
  • Hardwire printer to computer
  • Turn phones onto Airplane Mode at night if using an alarm in our bedroom. Phones off and out of bedroom if not using it for an alarm
  • Use shungite and specific plants such as succulents around the house to absorb radiation.
