Sinus Taping for Colds, Flu & Sinus Congestion

We've all been there...Congested from a cold or flu or maybe just chronic sinus issues causing facial pain, difficulty breathing, headaches and general discomfort. This congestion and discomfort often affects the quality of our sleep. For our body to heal and recover, we need solid sleep. This technique is great to use at any time of the day or night, however when used at night, it's not only supporting drainage in the face, reducing discomfort and allowing more nasal breathing, but it's improving our sleep and therefore our healing capacity.

Using this simple method I show you in the video below (or keep reading) you can clear your nasal passages, improve your nose breathing, reduce facial and sinus pain and sleep through the night easier. This is a technique that have found useful myself, as have many of my patients when they have had congestion due to acute (new) colds or flu or chronic (longer term) sinus issues.

As an Osteopath I am always aiming to improve the body's natural function and healing capacity. This taping technique is a simple way to open up the airways and improve breathing that compliments the hands on techniques I use in the clinic to clear congestion in the head, face and sinus area. When we open up the airways and allow for nasal breathing (as opposed to mouth breathing), we can:

  • Absorb more oxygen into our body
  • Filter incoming allergens, viruses and bacteria - reducing load on our immune system
  • Warm the incoming air
  • Moisten the incoming air
  • Keep nasal passages hydrated - reduces drying out of these membranes
  • Improve blood gas concentrations - having significant effect on optimal body functions
  • Preserve oral health

The Taping Technique

  1. Find a good quality kinesiology tape (I use GripIt)
  2. Cut the tape 2.5cm wide and 5-7cm long. You can round the corners for more staying power.
  3. Find the optimal angle to place the tape - place one fingertip on each side of your nose and gently separate the fingertips, gently dragging the skin in different directions. Hold and assess your nasal breathing. Whichever direction you find clears the nose better and frees your breathing then place the tape on this angle.
  4. Tear the backing in the middle and fold it back to expose the middle 3/5s of the tape.
  5. Stretch the middle 3/5s along its length by about 25% more
  6. Place it over the bridge of the nose about where you would see zinc cream on the angle that you have found to be optimal as above.
  7. Leave this on as long as you need to, however be mindful that the skin on the face can be quite sensitive so if this area gets itchy or irritated then please remove the tape immediately. I advise patients to use it for a few hours at a time or overnight then have a break to allow the skin to breathe.

And that’s it, breathe easy!
